Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Some OTs specialize in working with young children. Children may need rehabilitation due to a congenital problem, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. This type of child may have impaired functioning due to physical problems, such as poor balance or impaired motor control (gross motor or fine motor incoordination). A child with mental retardation may have deficits with simple problem solving and inappropriate behavior. An autistic child may need treatment due to impaired socialization or limited environmental interaction.

Some Pediatric OTs have had their success stories documented on various TV programs. These shows have highlighted the therapist's use of animals to help children with various types of physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities. They may use horses (Hippotherapy), dolphins, therapy dogs, and other animals for therapeutic intervention, often times with excellent result!

Some OTs work in the school system with children who are having difficulty learning or problems with reading or writing skills. They may work with the child one-on-one for a certain amount of time, as determined by an IEP. This is coordinated with other disciplines that the child may receive, and with the consent and cooperation of the parents.

Education

Case Study: The OT implements a plan of care which will include SI (sensory integration), based on a neurological report by the physician that the child has significant ADHD. The SI course of treatment will be used to help the child better process visual and motor stimuli, which will later on help the child to stay focused and participate in class work without distractions.
